A custom street sign now welcomes visitors to the Garden District one side, and Witkowski Way on the other. This sign perfectly sums at what has become Terry’s signature project. The Garden District was built the “Witkowski Way,” with lots of help from a bunch of folks who share Terry’s love for community. In 2008, then-newly elected Alderman Terry Witkowski passed legislation that directed the city to officially designate the 13 th aldermanic district as Milwaukee’s Garden District. Witkowski teamed up with an array of volunteer, including neighbors, and public and private partners. Bryan Simon, owner of Simon Landscaping, donated hundreds of hours of labor, which was vital to transform the overgrown, vacant land at 6 th and Howard into the community hub and a green technology showcase that we enjoy today. When Witkowski announced his retirement from the Milwaukee Common Council in 2018, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett and the staff of the City of Milwaukee Department of Public Works made this custom street sign for him. And as of February 20, 2024, it welcomes people to the walkway along S. 6 th Street.
